This new two-volume set emphasizes the connection between human nutrition ,
food security and biodiversity while also working to disseminate and preserve traditional and ethnic knowledge of herbal medicine and therapies . Two volumes make up Ethnic Knowledge and Perspectives of Medicinal Plants : Volume 1 covers the traditional application of medicinal plants’ curative qualities and treatment methods , while Volume 2 discusses the various dietary and nutritional advantages of medicinal plants as well as Ayurvedic medicine . Both volumes emphasize the need of protecting biodiversity in many areas rich in medicinal plants, as well as the significance of bioresources for human nutrition and nutraceuticals based on ethnic knowledge .
Volume 1 examines the historic use of medicinal plants as promising therapies for cancer , liver disorders , COVID-19 and other human ailments . It also explores the benefits of medicinal plants in disease prevention , treatment and management . It looks at the effectiveness of traditional Indian medicine , Ayurvedic and Chinese herbal medicine and other ethnic herbal traditions utilized by indigenous peoples in South . America , Turkey , India and Azerbaijan , among other places .
Many flora are covered, and the medical and therapeutic uses of more than 100 wild mushrooms are explained in detail for their ethnomedical value . While volume 1 largely focuses on using natural plant resources to address certain health conditions , volume 2 examines the nutritional and dietary benefits of traditional medicinal plant use and promotes biodiversity preservation for sustainable and nutritious diets .
Information on more than 2200 vascular plant taxa from 127 families is included in the volume , along with other taxa from leaf , fruit , flower , subterranean and other portions that may be used as food plants . This volume covers the distinctive nutritional qualities of wild edible mushrooms (206 species, representing 73 genera) , which are found in Southern India . Ethnic knowledge about wild edible mushrooms is a developing field that is unique and based on the folk knowledge of tribal people . The writers examine different lichens as spices , flavorings and nutritional supplements . Seaweeds (including spirulina) include fucoidans , which are known for their nutritional value , antiviral activity , antioxidant activity , anti-cancer activity , anti-diabetic activity and other benefits .
The authors also look at the various dynamics—lower income , difficulty accessing services ,conflicts between different ethnic groups , cultural attitudes (some ethnic groups practice vegetarianism) , lack of socioeconomic resources and disease prevalence—that ethnicity has on healthcare and nutritional systems at different levels . These two significant volumes work together to underscore the importance of preserving and integrating biodiversity while also preserving and sharing the invaluable ethnic knowledge of medicinal plants that has been accumulated over thousands of years .
