by authors Huy P. Pham and Lance A. Williams III
Review Questions and Case Studies for Transfusion Medicine , Apheresis and Hemostasis is the result of a two-year collaboration involving 50 professionals , many of them are recognized national leaders in their respective professions .
It also symbolizes our enthusiasm for and sense of privilege in passing on our knowledge of transfusion medicine and apheresis to the next generation of doctors. The major objective of this book is to assist the readers in establishing a strong foundation of both fundamental and sophisticated conceptual understanding in order to get ready for the American Board of Pathology (ABP) certification exam in transfusion medicine .
This book is not meant to serve as a replacement for textbooks, in-depth studies , review articles or clinical education .
Further , readers are recommended to keep up-to-date with their expertise by attending national events and reading clinical journals because the world of medicine , both from a scientific and regulatory perspective , evolves quickly .
A brand-new chapter titled “Data Interpretation in Laboratory Medicine” was added to the book to provide readers with the fundamental skills in critical reading and data analysis , which are crucial in daily medical practice . The readers of this chapter are tasked with drawing logical conclusions from the provided information and/or statistical findings .
A chapter titled “Practical Calculations in Transfusion Medicine , Apheresis and Hemostasis” is also included for your convenience . It helps you compile all the relevant formulas frequently utilized in everyday practice . These chapters are exclusive to our book and are not included in any other books that are currently available . Each chapter’s authors independently came up with each of the questions in this book .
Each topic can either be answered on its own or as a component of a case study that includes challenging situations related to transfusion medicine , apheresis and hemostasis . In the authors’ clinical experience , these questions frequently reflect both uncommon and typical clinical circumstances .
Then , each question is followed by five potential responses , only one of which is right or the optimal response . A conceptual explanation of the question’s prompt is followed by a more factual explanation of the correct and incorrect responses . We left it up to each author to decide how to elucidate the incorrect answer options .
Human resources (answer A) covers staffing , selection , orientation , training and competency assessment of personnel . Some authors opted to be more direct (e.g., Answer A is inaccurate because…) , whereas other authors used a more conversational manner (e.g., Answer A contains these things) .
With the aid of this approach , students will be able to connect their factual and conceptual knowledge to create a strong basis for use in clinical practice .
A list of articles and books that will be helpful to the driven student who wants to become an expert in the field is provided at the end of each chapter .
A pre-test and post-test are included in our textbook as an additional unique element to aid readers in their own evaluation . The primary goal of this book as previously mentioned , is to assist readers in getting ready for the ABP certification exam in transfusion medicine .
We do however believe that this book is helpful to and can be used by all clinicians involved in the management of complex transfusion , apheresis and hemostasis issues , such as hematologists , anesthesiologists , surgeons and critical care physicians, given the interdisciplinary nature of the field of transfusion medicine , apheresis and hemostasis .
We also think it’s a good resource for these experts to use as they get ready for their own specialty certification exams , particularly when the subjects include things like transfusion medicine , apheresis and hemostasis . utilizes a straightforward case study framework with succinct bullet points , necessary tables and further examining a list Each chapter has between 30 and 50 questions drawn from actual clinical scenarios observed in everyday practice .
prepares readers for the clinical pathology board exam and the speciality exam for transfusion medicine Readers are exposed to both common and uncommon clinical scenarios to assist them in doing evidence-based and reasonably priced medicine in routine clinical settings .
