Methods in Bioethics : The Way We Reason Now (PDF)
by John Arras , Jr.
The chapters in this book were written by the late bioethicist John D. Arras , who is best renowned for his numerous contributions to the field’s approach . Always open-minded, Arras avoided labels like “casuist” or “pragmatist” and did not support any particular theory or practice in bioethics . He was familiar with the major philosophical schools that have dominated bioethics since the field’s inception , including pragmatism , the “new casuistry” Gert’s common morality and principlism . But rather than advocating for a specific theory or approach , Arras thoroughly examined such approaches and how they both broaden and narrow our field of vision . He wanted to expose problems with the analytical approaches used in the field of bioethics in the Kierkegaardian tradition of making life “harder” for the discipline . He favored meaningful essays as his primary vehicle for study and expression . The writings presented here show him considering brand-new issues and opportunities and they consistently produce novel and insightful ideas .
