Fascial Manipulation Practical Part (MOBI)

Authors Carla Stecco and Luigi Stecco

Welcome to the realm of fascia, a fascinating new area in musculoskeletal therapy .

In the human body , fascia creates a continuous tensional network that covers and connects every organ , muscle , nerve and even every muscle fiber . This ubiquitous tissue has changed from the “Cinderella of orthopaedic science” to an almost super star position within medical research after decades of severe neglect .

So let me give you a brief overview of the new concept of fascia that was put forth at the first Fascia Research Congress . The soft tissue portion of the connective tissue network that penetrates the human body is referred to as “fascia” in this context . This comprises local densifications of this network in the form of ligaments and tendons , in addition to dense planar tissue sheets that may also be referred to as “proper fascia” (such as septa , joint capsules , aponeuroses , organ capsules , or retinacula) .

It also contains softer collagenous connective tissues , such as the superficial fascia or the endomysium’s innermost intramuscular layer . Although this new nomenclature won’t please everyone , it has several significant benefits for the industry . Fascial tissues are viewed as one interconnected tensional network that adapts its fiber arrangement and density in response to local tensional demands , as opposed to the most frequently arbitrary demarcation lines between joint capsules and their intimately involved ligaments and tendons (as well as interconnected aponeuroses , retinacula and intramuscular fasciae) .

This terminology is consistent with the non-professional understanding of the term “connective tissue” (as opposed to medical and biological scientists , who include cartilage , bone and even blood as connective tissue) and it fits well with the Latin root of the term “fascia” (bundle , bandage , strap , unification , binding together) .
