Bioprinting Principles and Applications (PDF)
by Wai Yee Yeong and Chee Kai Chua
Researchers have been working with bioprinting in labs all over the world , initially only to establish if it was possible to push cells through a printer without killing them (in most cases it is) and then trying to generate cartilage , bone , skin , blood arteries , little parts of liver and other tissues . There are several methods for attempting to “engineer” tissue, one of which is building a scaffold out of plastic or another material and then adding cells to it . A bioprinter provides advantages in adjusting control of the placement of cells and other components to replicate natural structures , at least in theory.
However , the subject of bioprinting has experienced its fair share of hype , just as the claims made for 3-D printing technology occasionally outweigh the truth. Although bioprinting researchers have made enormous progress , there are still a lot of difficult challenges to overcome . Nobody with any credibility asserts they can print organs or has a heartfelt belief that it will happen in the next 20 years , but advancements in bio-printing have made it possible to customize some body parts for procedures like hip replacement .
The concept of tissue engineering will be the starting point for this book , which will then cover a variety of scaffolds for tissue engineering , bioprinting methods and materials , cell processing , 3D cell culture techniques , computational design and simulation , multidisciplinary approaches in bioprinting and applications of bioprinting .
Contents :
Overview of Tissue Engineering Tools for Tissue Engineering Scaffolds Bioprinting Methodologies Cell Sources for Bioprinting Materials for Bioprinting Cell Culture in Three Dimensions Simulation and Computational Design Application of Bioprinting: Potential and Challenges Readership: Senior undergraduates , tissue engineering research students , members of the general public and professionals .
Key characteristics :
The only book with a distinct bioprinting focus . Platform technologies will be used to structure the book, and each chapter will serve as a key link in the bioprinting process chain . It is a textbook designed to introduce readers to the topic of bioprinting by covering the main bioprinter suppliers and their system mechanisms , benefits and drawbacks as well as offering a variety of examples . This book is suitable for students due to the inclusion of review questions at the end of each chapter .
