In order to promote advancements in translational research and clinical practice, the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical
Care Medicine publishes original, high-quality papers, reviews and clinical trials in the fields of respiratory, critical care and sleep
medicine.
Overview
In addition to animal research that advances our knowledge of the pathophysiology and management of illnesses affecting the
respiratory system and critically sick patients, the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine focuses on human
biology and disease.
The sibling journal, the American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology, publishes papers that are either entirely or
primarily focused in cell and molecular biology.
The Journal also aims to publish, in a variety of formats, high-caliber review papers and clinical trials in relevant fields.
The Current Situation of theA survey of art typically covers a wide range of topics and advances bench research to the bedside.
Reviews that are shorter are published as Pulmonary or Critical Care Perspectives. These typically advance a consensus for the care of
a certain process and are more narrowly focused.
Concise Clinical Reviews offer an evidence-based summary of the literature on subjects that are relevant to the practice of sleep,
critical care and pulmonary medicine. Images in Pulmonary, Critical Care, Sleep Medicine and the Sciences publishes images that
make novel discoveries or noteworthy contributions to the area.
Debates of a topical nature on matters of significance to the membership of the American Thoracic Society, as well as to pulmonary
and critical care medicine, have been a recent trend and the Journal’s future course.
Additional recent modifications include the inclusion of works from the critical care medicine sector and the expansion of the journal’s
editorial board to include colleagues from countries other than the United States of America.
The Journal’s primary goal is to create a global forum for cutting-edge critical care and respiratory medicine.
Past Events
The American Review of Tuberculosis published the journal’s inaugural issue in March 1917.
Numerous title modifications have occurred since then.
Added in 1953 was a subtitle, A Journal of Pulmonary Diseases.
The name was changed to the American Review of Respiratory Diseases in 1959, the American Review of Tuberculosis and Pulmonary
Diseases in 1955, and the American Review of Respiratory Disease in 1966. The Journal finally changed its name to the American
Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine in 1994.
John F. Murray (1973–1980), Edward Abraham (2004–2009), Reuben Cherniack (1985–1989), Robert A. Klocke (1989–1994), Alan
R. Leff (1994–1999), Martin J. Tobin (1999–2004), and Jacob Isasha Sznajder (2010–2014) were among the recent editors.
Jadwiga A. Wedzicha, MD, the editor in chief at the moment, teaches respiratory medicine at Imperial College London, UK’s Royal
Brompton Campus of the National Heart and Lung Institute.

The focus of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine is on human biology and illness, along with animal and in
vitro research that advances our knowledge of the pathophysiology and management of disorders affecting the respiratory system and
patients in critical condition.

The associated author’s membership status in the Society is the only factor used to determine member discounts.
